Fence down? Make it safe first.

We split an urgent job into two visits, and it is worth understanding why, because most people ring expecting one. The first visit removes the hazard and closes the gap. The second one builds the fence properly, a week or three later.

There is a good reason not to rush the rebuild. A post hole dug in saturated basalt clay the morning after a storm, then concreted while the ground is still moving, is a post that will be loose again by the second summer. Waiting a fortnight for the profile to settle and doing the footing properly is worth far more than having the fence back up by Friday. The temporary barrier costs you very little and buys the permanent one a decade.

There is no urgent-callout loading on our rates and no after-hours multiplier. A make-safe visit runs $250 to $550 depending on how much is down and how far out of town you are, a single blown-out Colorbond panel and post is $380 to $650, and a full rebuild is the standard $90 to $130 per metre for 1.8m Colorbond. Somewhere around the fourth consecutive panel, rebuilding the run gets cheaper per metre than patching it. We tell you which side of that line you are on before we start, not after.

Worked example. A Bletchington back boundary, October westerly, six panels flat and three posts snapped at ground level in an 18m run. Make-safe on the day, sheets stacked and temporary mesh across the opening to keep the dog in: $420. Two weeks later, full rebuild of the 18m in 1.8m Colorbond with frost-rated footings at $110 per metre: $1,980, plus $180 to cart the old material away. Total $2,580. Patching the three failed bays alone would have been roughly $1,500 and would have left nine metres of six-year-old shallow posts waiting for next spring.

What counts as an emergency fence repair in Orange?

Three things make a fence genuinely urgent rather than merely annoying. A pool barrier that no longer holds a child out is the most serious, because under the NSW Swimming Pools Act 1992 the barrier must be maintained in working order at all times and a gap is a legal problem as well as a safety one. A boundary fence that no longer contains a dog or stock is next, because you carry liability if the animal gets out onto the Mitchell Highway or a neighbour's block. Third is a fence that has become a hazard itself: a Colorbond sheet lifting in a westerly, or a panel leaning over a footpath. Everything else can wait for a normal booking.

By the time a spring westerly arrives, the post is already sitting in a slightly enlarged, softened hole. Should I repair the storm-damaged fence or replace the whole run?

Check the posts, not the panels. If the posts are sound and only sheets or palings have gone, repair is good value and will last as long as the rest of the fence. If the posts themselves have snapped at ground level, leaned, or lifted out, then patching one bay just moves the failure to the next bay along, because the whole run was footed the same way on the same day. When two or more posts have failed in a run of the same age, replacing the run is usually the cheaper decision over five years.
